Opera Software and Sigma Designs, a leading provider of System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions for home entertainment, connectivity and converging multimedia delivery, today announced they have teamed up together to optimize Opera’s TV products for Sigma’s optimized Smart TV processors.
The all-new Opera Devices Software Development Kit (SDK) 3.5, the Opera TV Browser and the Opera TV Store will now be integrated into Sigma Designs’ Smart TV processors. This collaboration combines Opera’s software expertise in developing browser-based solutions with Sigma’s Smart TV hardware expertise.
The result being solutions developed to meet the needs of TV and device manufacturers who want to design embedded browser-based solutions into their products with minimal integration efforts. The Opera-powered Sigma processors will allow OEMs to bring their products faster to market and equip them with powerful HTML5-based technology that will bring more entertainment options and a better web experience for end users.
The powerful and versatile Opera Devices SDK is a framework for OEMs to develop or deploy user interfaces, applications, browsers or internet multimedia services on their devices. Opera partners and customers that use the SDK and other Opera technologies come from different markets, including gaming, home appliances, automobile, set-top boxes and TVs.
The Opera TV Store is a complete HTML5-based store solution for Smart TVs, available for OEMs, developers and content providers to reach millions of app-hungry users. The integration of the Opera TV Store on the Sigma Designs’ processor means an increase in distribution for apps as the Opera TV Store will now also include Sigma’s customer base.
“The inclusion of the Opera Devices SDK, the TV store and browser on our Smart TV processors will give Sigma Designs a unique edge in the market,” says Mustafa Ozgen, vice president and general manager of Sigma’s home multimedia business unit. “With this capability, Sigma’s processors will offer best-in-class performance resulting in minimal integration effort and ultimate flexibility for our customers in providing a browser environment on the Sigma platform.”
“Partnering with an innovative company like Sigma will extend Opera’s goal to provide the best internet experience on any device and advance the power of HTML5 apps and technology,” says Frode Hernes, VP for TV Products, Opera Software. “Not only will this benefit Sigma’s OEM customers, but also the developers of TV apps on the Opera TV Store who will get a wider audience for their content, as well as the end user who will see more entertainment options on their TVs and devices.”
