Part of what developer’s corner aims to do is to showcase what developers are up to. I met Prudence Okoilu, a programmer and 400 level student of Physics and Electronics at the University of Lagos. In our discussion, he told me about a photo sharing social network platform he developed called Hipingg.
Hipingg has fast become not only a photo sharing platform but also a media tool, documenting world events as they happen in real time. This Nigerian photo-based social platform already boasts of over 60,000 registered users who are sharing photos on the platform every day, and is most popular in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, United States, and the United Kingdom.
With this steady growth, Hipingg intends to go mobile. Smartphone users are always on the go and they expect their favourite brands to interact and be part of the social media community. Hipingg is a good way to get started with social media. So far, the first version of called Hipingg 1.0 mobile launcher has been released for download on Nokia, BlackBerry and Android devices. This first version of the mobile app redirects users to the Hipingg site.

According to Prudence, “You can’t take a desktop experience and shove it into a 3-by-4 mobile screen. It has a very different behaviour pattern with a very different browse pattern. People interact with their phones very differently than they do with their PCs and I think that when you design from the ground up with mobile in mind, you create a very different product than going the other way. That’s why it has taken us this long to go mobile with this platform.
“We are tackling a very large market with unsolved problems in mobile. I can’t wait to get our next few releases to our users; I think this will really change the way people look at mobile photography and their phones. While I can’t share details yet, I assure you it will be pretty awesome. We are coming out with many more versions to improve our mobile and this is a first step. Plus did I mention, it is free.”
