This time around we are not focusing on the computer games but physical games for techies and tech community. I have been working out of the Co-Creation Hub for a while now and the only physical game I can see is Table Soccer.
I have done a little research on games that should be found in tech communities and games that would help with the nature of tech work – especially when it comes to thought process. Here are the list of the 3 games I can recommend to a tech community and reason.
Chess
I was in the middle of a discussion about the relationship between Computer Science and Chess at the Finals of Nigeria Chess Foundation Tournament hosted by Nigeria Breweries earlier this Month and I was stormed by the fact brought out by the chess players. It was said that most of big ICT companies allowed their staffs to play chess during the break period and I have seen chess board at Nokia West Africa’s Office but I never have the chance of playing with anyone.
Why Chess?
Chess is an exercise of infinite possibilities for the mind, one which develops mental abilities used throughout life: concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, strategic planning, creativity, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, to name a few. Chess can be used very effectively as a tool to teach problem solving and abstract reasoning.
Learning how to solve a problem is more important than learning the solution to any particular problem. Through chess, we learn how to analyze a situation by focusing on important factors and by eliminating distractions. We learn to devise creative solutions and put a plan into action. Chess works because it is self-motivating. The game has fascinated humans for almost 2000 years, and the goals of attack and defense, culminating in checkmate, inspire us to dig deep into our mental reserves. – From EduTechChess
Darts
Darts is a form of throwing game in which darts are thrown at a circular target (Dartboard) fixed to a wall.
Why Darts?
Seriously I don’t have strong reason to convince you why you should find a dart board in techie community. But I know it’s a game that required mind focusing to aim the centre of the dartboard fixed on the wall, and Maliyo’s Aboki and Kidnapped game are good examples of darts but we are not focusing of computing games now.
Monopoly
Monopoly is a board game named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single entity.
Why Monopoly?
Monopoly game brings the fair of economy trades on board helps you to understand your market, how and when to sell your Commodity. As an Entrepreneur which most of the techies that runs start-ups are need to be exposed to their market and understand the rules and regulation that guides the goods and services
