To satisfy telecom subscribers in Nigeria, the National Communications Commission (NCC) is making plans to use Access Model Platform to extend the broadband networks to underserved and un-served parts of the country. This will increase the number of penetration and reduce over-reliance of mobile subscribers on mobile services in the country.
The commission also noted that the case of multi registration detected in the on-going Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration exercise would be re-verified to create a data base of integrity and credibility.
According to the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Eugene Juwah, 110.43 million SIM were registered against the official figure of 95,886,714 active mobile lines in the country. This amounts to a massive increase of 14.54 million extra SIM registrations by subscribers.
The successful registrations of the SIM cards will usher in the mobile Number Portability (NP) by October, which will facilitate improve telecom services. Number Portability is a service that will allow subscribers that are not satisfied with their current providers to retain their number even when they move to other mobile networks.
The mobile number portability will also broaden the choice available to subscribers and on its own impose a code of behaviour on operators who will want to provide top-notch services in order to retain their subscribers.
Three companies-Inter connect, Saab Grintek and Telcordia will be responsible for the set up and implementation of the mobile portability number in Nigeria within the next six months of license issuance to mobile operators in the country.
