The second day of Mobile Web West Africa – #MWWA2013 was packed with lots of participants and panelist from the social sphere.
First up was Eskimi, one of the biggest mobile social networks in Nigeria, unveiling its ‘Eskimi For Business‘ solution for brands that want to increase engagement with target audience. Vytas was so kind to grant an audio interview during one of the tea breaks, and covered the value Eskimi was now offering to brands – from FCMGs to Startups and SMEs looking to have targeted advertisement and engagement via fan pages. Next up, Yookos – another social network that boasts of 13 million registered users globally with 60% from Nigeria. It took the #MWWA2013 platform to unveil its new API for developers. Yookos will host a free developer’s workshop in Lagos at Four Points by Sheraton on Tuesday, 14 May 2013 to reinforce the company’s commitment to empower developers in the region. The workshop will also be used to introduce Yookos’ newly released APIs which can be found at api.yookos.com to the global developer community and it will also present an exciting opportunity for the developers to network and share new ideas. iQube’s been around for sometime, organizing hackathons and developer training events, but that was not the case this time, as the alpha version of an app it had been working on went live. The app, Pleased To Meet You (P2MU), is a recommendation-based social network app that helps you find and connect with new persons based on your specific interests. It can be seen as a medium of connecting strangers with common interest. The more recommendations you get, the more your reputation and the higher your search ranking.
Away from the social scene, Gigalayer – a domain registration and web hosting company, after a month of pushing, got approval to conduct international transactions via MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and PayPal, making it the only Nigerian domain registration and web hosting company with the feature. This opens Gigalayer’s reach to the diaspora and the international market, who can now buy .ng and other domains without the hassle.
Back to the social bit, our friends at taafoo (or just the social media manager) saw it cool to highjack the #MWWA2013 hashtag to showcase inventory on twitter, and it sucked. The day ended with a VC4Africa meetup on the rooftop bar, with investors, startup founders, media, and other stakeholders in the tech space getting social and networking while discussing various issues including, sports, politics, funding, startup culture, and of course tech.
