Nigeria, a country where only 5% are smartphone users–the others are using dumb phone and feature phones. Samsung has again raised the bar in providing a cheap and affordable smartphone bundled with some cool offers.
Before now, we had the Huawei Gaga Phone from Etisalat that retailed at N19,000, an Android phone. Now, Samsung launched the Galaxy Pocket phone at a juicy N18,900. Can you see the closeness of the price? The price is not the only peck that is juicy here.
A line from a press release made available to Bloomberg;
According to Daesong Ra, Business Manager, Mobile Division Samsung Electronics West Africa, “Our proposition offers consumers smart phone experience that is not only affordable but ‘Clearly Different, Clearly Smart.’ The Samsung Galaxy pocket comes packed with over 400,000 free apps, faster internet connectivity at an amazing retail price of N18,900. In addition, consumers on the MTN network can enjoy 1 month free of internet data to experience these exciting smart phone solutions.”
This is some juicy offers. I am seeing this as an opportunity to have more people become smartphone users in Nigeria. Blackberry is enjoying being the no 1 smartphone in Nigeria. With this strategic alliance and these juicy offers, I will only say RIM/Blackberry should watch their back. This is also some strategic move from Spinlet too, to driving the adoption of its new product–music on mobile–that was launched May 3rd, this year.
Let the smartphone war begin.
As soon as we get a hand of the device, expect to see a review on the blog.
