Online casual gaming startup Kuluya has something new in the works. Some kind of fighting game called Afro Fighters.
I’ve gathered as much from Jason, who’s posted a concept poster of their next title to his Tumblr. Jason was instrumental to the angel round that saw Kuluya get $250,000 in seed money last year.
Back to the game. A fighting game is definitely an interesting twist. But save for the gorilla-like build of the man in the illustration, and the faintly menacing expression on his face, I’m not quite sure what kind of fighting it’ll be. The man does have his arms spread out like he’s ready to grapple…he’s wearing African print attire…and his feet are bare. All that suggests locally themed, unarmed physical combat. Ever heard of the form of local wrestling called Gidigbo? But this is only one character, so I won’t get ahead of myself. We’ll see.
For those counting, there’s more than a hundred Kuluya titles already. I can’t help wondering where they are going with all this. I mean, it’s a deluge, but are they sticking? Hopefully, Afro Fighters will have better luck than the vaunted Linda Ikeji versus The World. Check out the full concept art.
UPDATE: Jason has put up more concept art, and I now see that not getting ahead of myself was a good idea. The next character is sporting a contemporary style, and the one after that is holding — or is it wielding? — a stick.
