How in the hell did we miss this? Social Media Week is on in Lagos, and lots of exciting happenings have been taking place. One minute Stanbic IBTC is diving into social and right under our nose, another Bank – GTBank crosses the 1 million fan mark, and we are about 7,000 fans late in sharing this with you.
Well, it’s no shocker as Nubi already foretold this was going to happen, having covered the Facebook landscape for 2012. Pastor Adeboye was first to cross the line, followed by Omotola Jalade, a popular nollywood artist, and now GTBank, making it the first corporate brand to cross the mark.
An insider shared with us that this is just the beginning for the brand’s social presence, as it looks to triple it – especially on Facebook before the year runs out. Backed up with a social media team of more than 25 people and a very friendly budget on digital media, all of 5.3 million Nigerians on Facebook is only the limit.
According to Techloy, GTBank’s Facebook grew from 199,000 fans in February 2012 to 1,000,1800 in February 2013. Another key statistic is that there is an average of about 30,000 people talking about its Facebook page on a daily basis and the company is constantly reaching an average of 100,000 people on every post it makes.
Now that’s pretty impressive when talking Engagement Rate for a brand that would be easily confused as being a boring one in comparison to the telcos. Even though MTN LoadedNG seem to be having better engagement at 0.249% as compared to GTBank of 0.179%, one must acknowledge the bigger your crowd, the more difficult it becomes to engage with them, as you get to have clusters of different social habits.
No doubt the social media space for brands will be very interesting for 2013, and with GTBank already embracing MobileMoney via Eskimi – a mobile social network of 5.7 million Nigerians, the party definitely just got started.
