Hangout With Hollywood Insider: Franklin Leonard – Afrinolly

I was at Southern Sun Hotel, Ikoyi some weeks ago when the Afrinolly Short Film Competition flagged off and it amazes me how technology keeps changing the face of nearly everything these days. The competition is a unique, innovative and youth-focused competition, with singular concentration on the next generation of African film makers.

The competition was conceived entirely as an online challenge open to Africans from across the world who are creating or have created short films and/or documentaries not more than 15 minutes longthan 15 minutes. Participants are expected to upload their films to a dedicated competition website and the finalists would be decided by a panel of jury and public voting.

Now, Afrinolly is changing the game of entertainment by leveraging on social media channels such as Google+ to enrich and educate participants by organizing hangouts with entertainment industry leaders and players. Afrinolly will be hosting an open hangout with Franklin Leonard via Google+ this Friday, 23rd, November 2012 at 16:00 hours GMT.

Franklin Leonard, the former Vice President of Creative Affairs for Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, is the creator of the Black List, a yearly publication that highlights Hollywood’s most popular unproduced screenplays. Of the 50 screenplays highlighted over the last six years in the Black List, over 120 have been made and distributed, earned $11 billion worldwide at the box office, and won 20 Academy Awards from over 80 nominations.

On Friday, Franklin will be sharing insights into the elements that make screenplays/storylines great; the place of quality screenplay in the creation of short films; and nuggets on how to capture your audience in 15 minutes or less. He would also be shedding light on why he created the Black List and what it has come to represent in Hollywood today.
