About Apps4Africa

There is no question that the future of Africa will be determined by its innovators, entrepreneurs, and young leaders. With Apps4Africa 2012, Appfrica International intends to energize these young innovators as they develop applications that will address the challenges facing young people across Africa, thereby growing successful entrepreneurs and connecting them with business opportunities. An approach that is essential to invigorating economic opportunity in Africa.

To date, Apps4Africa’s success is a direct result of partners, including the U.S. Department of State (DOS) – the primary fiscal sponsor for the last three Apps4Africa competitions. In 2012, the challenge is for African innovators to develop mobile, web, and desktop applications that help Africans overcome obstacles and challenges in scaling their innovations, sourcing financial support, and addressing the issues African businesses face while operating. To that end, DOS encourages committed organizations to provide additional financial support to Apps4Africa so that a much bigger impact can be made on the continent in 2012 and beyond.

The Apps4Africa 2012 Business Challenge is promoting African solutions to youth unemployment through entrepreneurship and skill matching, while highlighting support for economic growth and opportunity. Apps4Africa will continue to build on the measurable success achieved in previous years and enhance local networks through annual local challenges.

History of Apps4Africa

The Apps4Africa competition began in late 2009 as an annual program that aimed to support African social entrepreneurs using technology to solve societal problems. Through this program, to date,  funding has been made available to twelve participants from nine African countries.

The Apps4Africa program has run successfully for the past three years thanks to generous sponsorship from partner, the U.S. Department of State. Appfrica is eager to build this program with the help of additional fiscal sponsors, in order to provide further support to African technologists.
