Mozilla is a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping the power of the Web in people’s hands. It is also a global community of users, contributors and developers working to innovate on your behalf. The goal is to build a brighter future for the Web.

Mozilla is a major force in the development of the Web’s fundamental technologies and with the significant changes in the Web there also has to be major additions or changes with significant research and experimentation.

Mozilla’s platform projects include making web applications compelling to users and developers as alternative distribution models.

Mozilla has a range of projects which includes:

  • Big blue button, an open source web conferencing that enables universities and colleges to delivers a high-quality learning experience to remote students.
  • Buddy cloud- A collection of technologies and tools for open federated social networking.
  • Entropy Wave- Specializing in open video Technology.
  • Gladius- Client-side 3D game engine for the web.
  • iHeartCode- An interactive collaborative platform to learn coding.

Introducing Mozilla Popcorn

Popcorn is the result of ongoing collaboration between filmmakers, developers and webmakers. Popcorn lets users link social media, news feeds, data visualizations and other content directly to moving images.

The result is a new form of multimedia storytelling that lives and breathes more like the web itself: interactive, social, and unique each time. It adds interactivity and context to online video, pulling the rest of the web right into the action in real time. In short form, Mozilla Popcorn supercharges web video.

The focus is on three types of users:

Developers

Javascript libraries like Popcorn.js give developers the tools they need to create standards-based interactive media. These include Popcorn.js, Seriously.js, ChromaGL.js and more.

Users / Makers

User-friendly products and web apps like Popcorn Maker make authoring interactive media easy for anyone.
These include Popcorn Maker, Popcorn Maker FCP and Butter SDK

Media Professionals

The Mozilla Popcorn team provides outreach and professional development for interactive storytellers and film makers.
These include partnerships with PBS, the National Film Board of Canada, The Tribeca Film Institute, The Center for Social Media at American University, ITVS, Arte, and many more.

With content creation being digital and a lot of alternative forms of video production and distribution being sought, it is a welcome development project and hopefully, Mozilla will also partner with Nollywood to add to the change that is currently being experienced and produce innovative guerilla filmmakers who will look more to the web.
