1. Make sure that your password is safe
Try to create a unique and unusual password for the social networking site. Make sure that you keep it to yourself only without sharing it with anyone else. In case you doubt that someone might be in possession of your password, then make sure that you change it. An alphanumeric password that does not contain your vital information would be the most secure.
2. Control your privacy settings
You can control the amount of exposure of people to your content by controlling and changing your privacy settings. You can start off by limiting the access to your photos, profile, posts and videos by changing it to ‘Friends Only’. The default setting in Facebook, for example, is ‘Friends of Friends’ that exposes your content to virtually hundreds of people! Make sure that you scroll through the privacy settings of your social networking site and change them appropriately.
3. Be judicious in choosing applications
You will keep getting various requests for applications like surveys, games, quizzes and so on. We end up clicking on the ‘Accept’ button without realizing that each one of these applications is uniquely devised and some of them gain access to your private information and make it public. Always go through the agreement provided by the application before clicking on the ‘Accept’ button to avoid all this.
4. Beware of phishing
A lot of dangerous phishing activities are happening via social networking sites. Due to this your account may get infected/hacked by clicking on tempting phrases that appear on your screen. Once your account is infected, the same phishing post will circulate to your friend, causing a chain reaction. For preventing this, make sure you have an Anti-Phishing/Malware application installed on your social networking site apart from being judicious in clicking on tempting messages.
5. Do not accept friends whom you don’t know
Be very judicious when accepting new friends on to your friends’ list. You must limit yourself to the number of friends that you really know. Social networking sites only advise the user to accept friends that you have real world dealing with and not people that you vaguely know. Don’t risk yourself and your reputation by accepting any unknown person’s friend request blindly, who might share your information with unknown people and cause a nuisance.
6. Give a thought to your posts
Remember that the posts you make on your social networking site would stick around on the Internet for a while, even if you do remove them later. During that time the videos and photographs might circulate on the web without your knowledge, consequently harming your image in a negative manner. This does not necessarily mean that it is unsafe or unwise to put up posts, but be mindful of the implications that it might have in the future.
7. Be gentle
Avoid using or spreading negativity to other via your posts, comments, photos or videos. Hate messages, violent videos, pornography and so on should be avoided and not encouraged at all. Embarrassing or hurtful content in posts can incite people and hurt them too. Completely avoid spreading any form of negative content that is termed as ‘Cyber Bullying’.
