Open Innovation African Summit, #OIAS: Day one Recap

Editors Note: Open Innovation Africa Summit is ongoing at Safari Park Hotel, Kenya. It started yesterday. Here’s a summary of what went down yesterday. It is put together by Seyi Eluwole.

It was a wonderful sight today as more than 200 Innovators, leaders, Software engineers, policy makers, and several other chap minds come together at the 2012 Open Innovative Africa summit (0IAS) head at Safari Pack Hotel, Kenya.

The opening speech was delivered by Jussi Hinkkanen, VP Corporate Relations, Nokia. Jussi threw more light to the important of the meeting and why Nokia and other Partners has to bring several brave mind from across the globe for innovative discussion on the issues in Africa and the way forward. Other speakers at the opening event include:

  • Dr Bitange Ndemo, Permanent Sec., Kenyan Government.
  • Ambassador Sofie From-Emmesberger, Finnish Government.
  • Valerie d’Costa, Program Manager, infoDev.
  • Shiv Shivakumar, Senior Vice President IMEA, Nokia.

The opening speech followed by stream introduction. The participants were introduced to their streams which include:

  • Technology Innovation Financing.
  • Mobile Information Society
  • eTransformation.
  • Ecosystem for Innovation.

Each of the streams meet briefly to discuss the various objectives of the streams. The streams are expected to dive deeper into their various topics and come up with some innovative ideas to move the continent forward.

Another important highlight of the event is the show-casing of several works and Innovative idea from several individuals. The demo were show-case at different stand after which the participant are expected to vote the most creative innovation. Umuntu Media won the first place out of all the demo show-cased. The summit continues today. The participants are expected to have fun and enjoy the dinner while it last.
