Since their last meetup in December 2012, the #GeeksInPink have been busy uncovering new ways to make 2013 the year of the girl geek. This year, they have had two major events, leading them closer to their goal of having more female founded tech start-ups in Nigeria.
The first was ‘An evening with a tech icon’, hosted by Ms. Funke Opeke, CEO MainOne Cable Company, in her office. This informal session provided a platform for the ladies present to discuss issues bordering on career, experiences, technology, entrepreneurship and how women can excel in the tech industry.
The second was during the Social Media Week Lagos, where four members of the Ladies in Tech were on a panel to discuss how social media can be used for social change. The event was organized by the GirlEffect and it was an interactive session on how social media has advanced economy, professional and personal goals .
One recurring theme in these discussions is how difficult it is to keep up with technology trends, especially for businesses. This is why the Ladies in Tech are launching a series called #StartingAStartup, aimed at simplifying the processes involved in starting and sustaining a technology business in Nigeria. The first part, The Introduction, will feature ladies who have started technology businesses speaking on opportunities and challenges they have encountered.
In the next meetup, Bukola Akinfaderin, CEO and founder of Jandus Radio will be sharing how she created Jandus Radio(the app and the company) and the journey thus far. This will be followed by a panel of three ladies talking about their journey into the start-up space and a Q&A session. Come with your questions, comments and suggestions. There will be a lot of collaboration, networking and connecting going on.
The event holds this Friday, 5th of April, 2013 between 5pm and 7.30pm at the CCHub. For more information and to register, go here.
p.s. This is an all-girls event. Absolutely no males allowed! …but you can tell a tech-minded lady about us 😉
