There’s nothing like drama to liven up a slow news day, Loy, we both know that very well.
Tech blogging is hard, because tech by its nature is inherently boring. It’s hard to keep things interesting even for the hardcore geek circle. So we like to mix things up every now and then, create a little drama. Stick it to a company here, make fun of some dumb product there, curate every last juicy detail of some otherwise obscure tweetfight over here…people love it, and it’s great for page views. Life’s good.
But like sex and alcohol, and other things that make us happy, there’s a point where you just gotta draw the line. Once you’re past that point and it becomes an orgy or a drunken stupor, it’s no longer fun for everyone concerned. A little snark every now and then is funny, but if all you do is write snark, people will eventually stop laughing.
That’s not to say that I’m above taking a swipe at some fellas on occasion. But I sure as hell don’t go around kicking them in the nuts or pouring salt in their wounds. Where human beings are concerned, not every piece of news that breaks is a story, unless you’re Gawker, or Linda Ikeji. The page view boost will last a week at most. But the resulting animosity will likely never go away. Soon, you might need more than a thick skin to fend it all off.
I’m beholden to TechLoy for helping me find my voice within the space. Your blog is Nigeria’s most respected technology site. I’d really hate to see TechLoy go over to the snark-side.
Seriously Loy, you need to cut the crap and go back to blogging boring old tech for a change.
