I often ask startup owners where they see their company in say 5 years and it is always shocking to know that many simply reply that they want to be number 1 in their field. The question, “what does it mean to be number 1?”. Most people start out in business because they feel they have one skill or because they don’t want to work for anyone. This happens normally to technical guys. Once they are able to develop an app, the next thing on their mind is starting their business.
Yes, many people start out like this but to succeed in business, you need much more than technical skills. You need to be able to attract and keep your customers happy. You are only in business when you are able to convince other people from buying what you are selling. Once you are able to achieve this, then it can be said that you are in business. So, since you are able to convince people to buy your product / service, why is it that many businesses die within first few years? The answer is simple…most founders don’t have a clear vision. They are in business because that is what their friends are doing.
Your reason for starting a business might be to live your passion. But to move from startup to a great company, you need much more than passion. You need to have a clear vision. Vision will have to be at the center of everything that you do in your business. Things don’t just happen. You have to initiate the process. It takes a lot of work on your part but it starts with a single step in the right direction. It is not enough to start your business, you need to have an idea of which direction your business is going. What problems are you trying to solve? What is it that you want to do?
All major companies have clear vision. And this governs everything they do. It determines the kind of system they put in place and how they handle their human resources. You can not move from startup to a great company without Vision. There is nothing you can achieve in life and business without a clear picture of where you are going. VISION is an important foundation upon which all achievements are built. Through vision, you determine indirectly what the future of your business becomes. So, what is vision for your business? If you don’t have anything, now is the time to carve the vision for your business!
