Cameroon mobile market leader MTN is offering a 15% bonus on every recharge made via mobile money accounts. The promotion runs until March 25. MTN launched mobile money services end-2010 in partnership with local bank Afriland First Bank. MTN had about 120,000 mobile money accounts in early February 2012.
One cannot but assume, that a successful run in Cameroon will see MTN replicate the initiative in other African countries from where it operates. I’d take a wild guess to say Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin are next in line, but who goes first of the three? Perhaps, we should focus on Cameroon to see how the MTN offer plays out.
