Nigeria: Winners And Losers In 2011 Mobile Market 9% Growth

The number of mobile subscriptions in Nigeria grew by 9% during 2011 to 95.2 million compared to 19% growth in 2010. We did check out the NCC website to crunch some numbers and did get a 9.2% growth. However that’s taking Installed Capacity into consideration. Active Lines only grew by 6.14%, while connected lines grew the least by 4.41%. One thing is evident from all of this statistics, growth was and is still being experienced, but who are the winners and loosers?

The overall declining trend mainly results from market leader MTN growing slower (7.7%) over the period as it concentrated on the data segment rather than fast low-end voice acquisition. The SIM card registration process has also impacted on the country’s level of net additions. Etisalat recorded the highest growth, 59%, and took market share from Globacom and CDMA operators. The latter are continuing to lose subscriptions, except Visafone, which grew by 2% in 2011.
